Once again, The American Civil War Society will be presenting Calico Civil War Days at Calico Ghost Town on February 17-19, 2007.  This year is set to be more exciting than ever with some changes and additions.  Come see Confederate Lt. Col Keith Harriott once again defend the town while Union Major Jeffrey Copeland attempts to capture and take control of Calico.  At some time, perhaps Generals R.E. Lee and U.S. Grant will permit a temporary truce to exist so all can eat and share stories together and even bring their families in for a grand old fashioned Cotillion.

Calico Ghost Town is located at I-15 and Ghost Town Road just 10 miles North of Barstow.

Schedule of Events

PRESIDENT’S DAY WEEKEND

Calico Civil War

February 17-19th, 2007

The Battle for the Town of Calico

Reenactor Details

ACWS Membership

All reenactors participating at Calico must have a current 2007 membership card prior to the event – otherwise you will not be allowed through the front gate without paying the entrance fee.  Download a membership application from the  www.acws.net  web site and mail it to Gary Iverson in plenty of time for him to get your card to you by snail mail.

Parking

A special traffic lane into the Ghost Town will be available until the Ghost Town opens for business, for card-carrying members of the ACWS.  Reenactors may drive up the back road to the upper camp to unload Friday night and Saturday morning.  All vehicles must be out of the town by 9 AM Saturday until the event is over at 4 PM Monday.  No vehicles may use the front entrance until the Town closes at 5 PM.  A limited number of parking passes for the upper lot are available for reenactors.  Please contact [email protected] to reserve one prior to the event.

Scenario

The Confederates, setting up their camp in the north part of the town, have occupied the Town of  "Calico", as it is a Silver Town of great importance to their beloved Confederacy.  (It is viewed most like Winchester or Harpers Ferry in that it is contested quite often.)  Lt.Col. Keith Harriott, the Confederate Brigade Commander, will dispatch the entire Confederate Brigade to its’ defense as they have learned that the Federals will once more try and wrestle it from them.  Lt.Col. Jeff Copeland, the Union Brigade commander and the Union Camp will camped in the horseshoe pit area.

Civilian Town Hall  will be in the Calico Artisan shop, which is the building to the left as you come up the stairs from the parking lot. All reenactors are welcome to visit our Town Hall for its Hospitality Service.

We will offer coffee, tea, and hot chocolate for the minor sum of 4 bits.  Mike Hamilton will have ACWS license plate frames, T-shirts and caps for sale.

The Widow Peters Boarding House

The Artisan Shop will also double as the Widow Peters’ Boarding House with rooms to let.  Contact the Widow Peters if you would like to reserve a space for the night  (woman only and you have to bring your own bed!)  There is a limited amount of ground next to us to pitch a period tent for ACWS Civilians wishing to do so.

Civilians Needed for Crowd Control

Because of a renegotiated contract compensating us we will NOT be collecting Donations.  However, we will need Civilians for Crown Control.  Please stop by Civilian Town Hall ½ hour before each battle is to begin and pick up your red, white, and blue sash and your position assignment.  You will be standing between the battle field and the crowd, answering questions like “When did the Civil War happen?”,  and “What color is which side?”, and making sure that the public does not serge onto the battlefield in anticipation of hearing the cannons.  (They will hear them, all right!)  You will be rewarded with red licorice and a President’s Day Button.

Children’s Social at Calico Artisan Shop

We need helpers and a volunteer to head up this activity which happens twice a day for ½ an hour.  We can make corn husk dolls, paint fans, make paper bonnets, or play “Graces” and roll the big hoops up and down the street.  All the supplies and games will be provided.  Please contact Shelley Peters if you wish to be involved with this.  This event attracts a number of children who are eager to learn and participate.

Ladies Tea with Mrs. Grant for interested potential members        Saturday at 1:30 PM

This Ladies Tea is on the schedule and is open to all reenactors and interested public.  Please bring your teacup and saucer and a plate of goodies suitable for a luncheon tea. (Because that’s probably the time we will have to eat lunch!)  Tea will be provided by our lovely Tea Hostesses, Michelle and Lynn Hamilton.  If there are members interested in joining ACWS this is something to invite them to.  We would love to open up the discussion of our hobby and what it means to be a Civil War Reenactor.  We hope to field lots of questions from interested potential members.

The Ladies of the Civilian Corps  Present a Civil War Era Fashion Show

Wendy Atkins will be in charge of the Fashion shows to be presented Saturday at 3:30 PM, and Sunday and Monday at  1:30 PM.  She will need models.  If you have a great dress or one with which she can describe your persona please line up at the stage area 10 minutes before show is scheduled to start.  Men and soldiers are welcome.

Cadet Corps

On Saturday, at 4 PM, Brian Wiswell will be having a meeting of the Cadet Corps.  Meet at the Schoolhouse in North Calico.

Blue and Gray Cotillion and “Coming Out Ceremony”

Diana and Kimberly Fickas, teachers at the Remembrance School of Gentility and Refinement, are looking forward to the “Coming Out Ceremony” to be held at the start of the Blue and Gray Cotillion.  This is for the girls who have finished all the classes and reached their 16th birthday.   Soldiers with sabers are requested to bring them to use in an arch ceremony.

Church Services

Our Chaplains will be conducting Church Services for Union and Confederate Troops and Civilians and any public at 9:15 AM in Central Calico.

Sewing Workshop

Connie Green will be teaching a “Pincushion” workshop at 10 AM, Sunday, right after church.  The cost for materials will be under $5.  Please bring a chair to the Civilian Town Hall and your own sewing supplies-pins, needles, thread, scissors, etc., and any dryer lint you might be saving.

Sunday Tea

You are invited to have Sunday Afternoon Tea with the Civilian Corps at Town Hall at 4 PM.  Bring your teacup and saucer and something delicious to share.  This might be a good time to finish your pincushions.

Lyceum and Bake Sale

Bring out your period music, poems and talents and relax while we entertain ourselves with a Period Style Lyceum.  “Spenser and Jackson” will be presenting a special edition of their Minstrel Show sometime during the evening.

Hot beverages and yummy desserts will be available for a small charge.  This is an ACWS fundraiser put on by the Civilian Corps.  Donations of baked goods will be most welcome!  I know that Vickie Heine’s 100 Year Old Salt Pork Cake will be one of the first desserts to be sold out!

Free Food and Tours for Reenactors

Reenactors with an ACWS Membership Card will be treated to the Firehouse BBQ on Saturday night, either a breakfast or lunch on Saturday, and a lunch on Monday.  If there is not a table set up for tickets, please ask your Brigade Commander, Unit commander, or Civilian Director for your ticket.

Maggie’s Mine is offering free tours to all reenactors in period Costume after 4 PM.

Weather

God willing, we will have wonderful weather.  If not, there might be a change of locations for some of these activities.  Changes will be posted at Civilian Town Hall.

Gentlemen. Any of you that has a sword(s), please bring them to Calico. If you aren't going, could you send them for another to use? We will be having a Iron Arch for the young ladies having their Coming Out to walk under during their presentations at the Calico Cotillion. This will occur at the very start of the dance and should only take a few minutes. The more swords, the way more awesome. Please tell anyone you know that has a sword to remember theirs.

Also, Presidents, Generals, and all other officers with their wives, we would love to have you join in the line of dignitaries for the graduates to be presented to. You may email me if you have any questions.

Thank you all so very much,

Diana Fickas - Headmistress
